Digital Society public lecture by Dr. Jessica Pidoux

Dr. Jessica Pidoux is a digital sociologist at the University of Neuchâtel, Institute of Sociology. As a postdoctoral researcher, she conducts investigations at the intersection of the sociology of algorithms and the sociology of work, employing participatory science methods. She holds a Master's in Sociology from the University of Lausanne and a PhD in Digital Humanities from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Her research into online dating dynamics has examined matching algorithms, developers’ practices, and users’ experiences, highlighting various types of algorithmic biases and advancing knowledge in human-machine communication processes. Additionally, she is the director of PersonalData.IO https://personaldata.io/, a Swiss NGO specialising in the exercise of data rights and privacy protection. In this role, she has led algorithmic audits of gig platforms such as Deliveroo and Uber, contributing to fair working conditions for gig workers, and more broadly, to debates in digital policy.
