This talk invites reflections on the currently observable colonization of the epistemic by data-based artificial intelligence (AI). Drawing on the concept of “epistemic violence,” and feminist, postcolonial, and decolonial voices, it challenges the ideal/ized notions of (technoscientific) knowledge as fundamentally good and desirable as well as the technodeterministic and technosolutionist narratives that accompany AI technologies. It unpacks the violence inherent in the ways (1) that data-based AI is shaped by capitalist, control and surveillance interests, (2) that a datafied approach to the world privileges normalization, and (3) that planetary costs resulting from the exploitation of an objectified nature are treated as negligible side effects.
