Management and protection of sensitive and personal data with REDcap
REDCap, or Research Electronic Data Capture, is a secure web application developed by Vanderbilt University for the collection of sensitive or personal data especially in the context of clinical trials. The REDCap community is organized as a consortium of (mostly academic) institutions that have signed a agreement with Vanderbilt University. Through the Department of IT Services, the University of Fribourg is a member of this consortium. Use of REDCap is free for consortium members, and support is provided through a collaborative network. REDCap complies with the strictest requirements of ethics committees, making REDCap a preferred platform for research data collection.
Renku is a web platform developed by the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC, a joint project of ETHZ and EPFL). Renku allows collaborative management of computer code and the execution environment. Various interfaces such as JupyterLab or RStudio are available to users directly in the browser. Renku also simplifies reproducibility by recording every step of the data analysis. Thanks to the integrated version control system, calculations can be easily reproduced and checked. At present, Renku@UniFR is only available for teaching as part of the DigitalSkills@Fribourg program.
