From Functional Fibers to Catalytic Spinning

Seminar

+ Hybridveranstaltung)

This presentation provides an overview of current research activities within the Polymer Function & Processing group, focusing on the design of functional polymer fibers and advanced manufacturing concepts. Selected projects will be highlighted 1) the development of anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial drug-loaded melt-spun liquid-core fibers for hernia repair meshes 2) liquid-filled fibers for malaria vector control applications. In addition, the presentation will introduce CatSpin (catalytic spinning), a novel fiber manufacturing concept that directly couples catalytic polymerization with simultaneous fiber formation at ambient temperature. By combining catalytic synthesis with physical control mechanisms such as shear flow, elongational flow, and confinement. CatSpin aims at enabling control over polymer microstructure and fiber morphology while significantly reducing energy consumption compared to conventional extrusion-based processing. Together, these projects illustrate how polymer processing can be leveraged to create multifunctional materials with tailored structure-property relationships for healthcare, technical textile, and sustainable manufacturing applications.
