DESCRIPTION:Elon Lindenstrauss from Hebrew University received a Fields\nmedal last year for his work in ergodic theory and dynamical systems\nwith applications to deep problems in diophantine approximation and to\nquantum unique ergodicity which concerns eigenfunctions of the\nLaplacian on surfaces. In explaining some of his work, I will give the\nfirst definitions of ergodic theory, illustrate it on groups and\nspaces of matrices and show how this relates to long-standing unsolved\neasy-to-state problems in number theory.\n<br />\n[Invited by PD Dr. Paul Turner]
