DESCRIPTION:Particle methods discretize the solutions of PDEs onto zero-dimensional,\nconnectivity-less colocation points called ""particles"". Due to their\nLagrangian nature and a common, unifying algorithmic framework, they have a\nset of unique properties. We briefly review the basics of particle-based\nfunction and operator approximation and highlight some of the current\nlimitations for consistency and convergence on parabolic problems. We then\npresent a formal discretization-correction framework that restores\nconsistency on almost all particle distributions. Furthermore, we discuss\nongoing work in using these numerical schemes for multi-resolution\nsimulations on distributed-memory parallel computers. \n<br />\n[Invited by J-P. Gabriel and A. Janka]
