DESCRIPTION:We describe the classification of the maximal closed positive-dimensional\nsubgroups of the classical groups defined over\nan algebraically closed field and indicate the role which representation\ntheory plays. We then consider similar classification questions for\nexceptional type groups or for the associated finite groups of Lie type, \nwhere\nrepresentation theory also plays a significant role. The oldest results\nwhich we discuss were established by Dynkin in the 50's and the most \nrecent result\nappeared in 2004. Finally, we mention some current work on related \nquestions in the representation\ntheory of semisimple algebraic groups.\n<br />\n[Invited by Dr. Laura Ciobanu]\n
