DESCRIPTION:According to the national identity argument, a shared national identity promotes social cohesion and in particular trust and solidarity, which is again required for egalitarian redistribution. I criticize the argument, suggesting both that the theoretical reasons for accepting it are unconvincing and that it is not supported by the available empirical evidence.
