DESCRIPTION:We explore the concentration dependence of the mechanical properties of Carbopol microgel dispersions over a concentration range in which the systems exhibit solid-like behavior. This range extends from the ideal glass transition to beyond the nominal volume fraction of one, corresponding to the onset of particle compression. Surprisingly, we find that the frequency dependence of the storage and loss moduli exhibits scaling behavior over the entire range of concentrations investigated. However, we observe distinct relationships between the scaling factors below and above a nominal volume fraction of one. We interpret this change as a transition from high-frequency relaxation dominated by local elastic relaxations at particle contacts below volume fraction one to relaxation in which poroelastic effects associated with fluid flow through the pore space of the compressed microgel packing become important above volume fraction one.
