Earth’s subsurface holds vast untapped potential, including naturally occurring hydrogen (H2) gas, geothermal energy, and critical metals for new green technologies. Unlocking this potential requires a solid understanding of the geological processes, particularly plate tectonics, that shape resource distribution. Interdisciplinary field observations combined with tectonic simulations reveal Earth’s dynamic subsurface evolution and the likely timing, location, and scale of resource formation. The relevance of this fundamental research with applied dimensions extends beyond improving exploration strategies; its integration into university courses will inspire students and help them gain the skills needed for successful sustainable resource development and, ultimately, for securing a greener future.
