DESCRIPTION:Personal and professional information is being collected, aggregated, and violated in many countries around the world. One profession in particular—journalism—is tasked with keeping information in a sanctified space. Yet, myriad factors prevent journalists from taking available steps to better protect themselves, their communications, and their sources despite increasing levels of surveillance, digital attacks, and political enmity.  \n\nWorking within the U.S. context and using concepts from new institutionalism, Jennifer discusses the myriad challenges facing journalists and reveal why journalists and newsrooms are resistant to new technologies that enhance their abilities to carry out their watchdog role in a democratic society. In doing so, Jennifer will articulate how such adherence to the status quo parallels an intransigence and subsequent fragility facing democratic institutions more broadly and poses a threat to liberal democracy.
