DESCRIPTION:We will report on recent progress towards the classification of\nhomogeneous Einstein metrics. While homogeneous Ricci-flat spaces are flat,\nhomogeneous Einstein spaces with negative Einstein constant are \ndiffeomorphic\nto a Euclidean space, as predicted by the Alekseevskii conjecture. If \ntime permits we\nwill indicate some ideas of the proof. The classification of homogeneous \nEinstein spaces\nwith positive Einstein constant is wide open, even though there are \ngeneral existence and\nnon-existence results.
