This workshop is part of the ERC advanced Project “Locus Ludi. The Cultural Fabric of Play and Games in Classical Antiquity” based at the University of Fribourg (www.locusludi.ch) and supported by the European Research Council (Horizon 2020, # 741520). This scientific meeting intends to explore the social importance of games and gaming in antiquity. It prepares the publication of a collective volume on the archaeology of gaming and will address methodological questions as well as the state of the field, highlighting key trends in past scholarship and identifying avenues for future research. This will be followed by selected case studies from across the ancient world, organised by region, from Britain to the Levant, drawing on the specific strengths of the evidence available in each region.
