The Human Right to a Healthy Environment?
Conférence
Ouvert au grand public
06.03.2018 18:00 - 20:00
Présentiel
With John Knox (USA), United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment
In 2015, the United Nations finally created the role of a Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment. John Knox has filled this role with great energy and enthusiasm. However, one of the obstacles to progress is the lack of a globally recognized human right to a healthy environment. True, a healthy environment is necessary for human well-being and for the fulfilment of other human rights. But should international law also explicitly recognize a human right to a healthy environment? John Knox will present arguments for this step as he approaches the end of his 3-year term as Special Rapporteur. He will also discuss what this new human right would require of states and of businesses.
