Symmetry breaking is a cornerstone of modern physics, underlying numerous phenomena in materials science and condensed matter physics. Here I will discuss the intricate interplay between lattice distortions, symmetry breaking, and magnetic states, particularly focusing on altermagnets and multiferroic materials. The experimental methods of choice for investigating these materials are primarily neutron and X-ray scattering. These techniques are complementary for studying magnetic and lattice structures and dynamics and where simultaneously high magnetic fields and pressures may be used to manipulate the ground state. Altermagnets, a recently discovered collinear magnetic state, combine features of ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, such as hosting spin-polarized currents and the anomalous Hall effect, despite having no net magnetization. Multiferroics, on the other
hand, exhibit coexisting magnetic and electric orders, with strong coupling mechanisms offering unique opportunities for next- generation technologies. Understanding these phenomena is critical for advancing fundamental quantum mechanics and developing innovative applications in spintronics and low- dissipation electronics.
